BACKGROUND

The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) is a global, multi-faith alliance that brings moral urgency and faith-based leadership to the effort to end tropical deforestation. IRI serves as a platform for religious leaders to work in close partnership with Indigenous Peoples, government, civil society, and the private sector to protect rainforests and uphold the rights of forest guardians.

IRI operates country programs in Brazil, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, and Peru focused on education and awareness raising, training, on-the-ground mobilization, public outreach engagement campaigns, strategic communications and policy advocacy.

IRI Indonesia was officially launched in 2020 and is entering a new phase aimed at strengthening partnerships, scaling its impact, and positioning faith-based leadership as a force for rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Program Officer will support the day-to-day implementation of IRI Indonesia’s national program, working closely with the National Facilitator and other staff. The role involves program coordination, monitoring and evaluation, financial and administrative support, partnership engagement, and the development of educational and advocacy materials. The Program Officer will serve as a key technical and operational resource for the initiative and will contribute to strategic planning and delivery.

This position requires a strong background in program implementation, environmental or social development, coordination of multi-stakeholder initiatives, and an understanding of interfaith or Indigenous Peoples engagement. The Program Officer will be part of the IRI Indonesia team, located at EcoNusa Foundation, the host organization of the partnership, and will work closely with the National Facilitator.  The position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordination and Implementation

  • Assist the National Facilitator in implementing the national strategy and work plan as approved by the Advisory Council.
  • Support the coordination and delivery of IRI Indonesia’s core program areas: education and awareness raising, training, provincial chapter development, public campaigns, and policy advocacy.
  • Coordinate partner activities and ensure timely execution of program milestones.
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral collaboration, including between faith communities, Indigenous Peoples, and civil society.

 

Technical Support and Content Development

  • Draft technical documents and materials related to rainforest protection, the rights of Indigenous Peoples, climate change, and interfaith collaboration.
  • Assist in the development of educational, training, and advocacy tools grounded in Indonesia’s religious teachings and cultural context.
  • Collaborate with the communications team to prepare content for publications, campaigns, and training events.

 

Stakeholder and Partnership Engagement

  • Support coordination with IRI Indonesia’s key partners, including Religious Councils, AMAN, NGOs, UN agencies, and local communities.
  • Represent IRI Indonesia at technical meetings, trainings, and workshops when delegated.
  • Engage local actors to expand IRI Indonesia’s presence in forest provinces and support the launch and operation of provincial chapters.

 

Administrative and Financial Support

  • Assist in the development of program budgets and financial plans.
  • Support day-to-day financial management in coordination with EcoNusa’s finance team, including expense tracking, fund requests, and compliance reporting.
  • In collaboration with EcoNusa, ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial and narrative reports for internal and donor use.
  • Maintain organized records of program expenditures and activities.

 

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Contribute to the maintenance of a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system to track program impact and outcomes.
  • Produce regular M&E and narrative progress reports.
  • Support program learning through data analysis, documentation of best practices, and lessons learned.

 

Advocacy and Campaign Support

  • Provide logistical and programmatic support to advocacy efforts aimed at influencing public policy, forest governance, and private sector practices.
  • Assist in organizing public events, interfaith forums, and high-level meetings with government and civil society actors.
  • Monitor relevant forest, land, and Indigenous policy developments and provide timely technical input.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, development studies, public administration, religious studies, or a related field. Proven experience and results may replace academic requirements.
  • At least 5 years of experience in project coordination, environmental or rights-based programming, or interfaith/multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Strong personal commitment to rainforest protection and the promotion of human rights.
  • Proven experience in financial and administrative program support, including budgeting and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of Indonesia’s religious, environmental, and Indigenous landscapes.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia; English is an asset.
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Willingness to travel within Indonesia and occasionally internationally.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in tropical forest regions or with Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia.
  • Familiarity with environmental governance, deforestation, and climate policy issues.
  • Previous experience with monitoring and evaluation tools and systems.
  • Background in interfaith dialogue, ecotheology, or spiritual engagement on environmental issues.
