BACKGROUND
The Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) is a global, multi-faith alliance that brings moral urgency and faith-based leadership to the effort to end tropical deforestation. IRI serves as a platform for religious leaders to work in close partnership with Indigenous Peoples, government, civil society, and the private sector to protect rainforests and uphold the rights of forest guardians.
IRI operates country programs in Brazil, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, and Peru focused on education and awareness raising, training, on-the-ground mobilization, public outreach engagement campaigns, strategic communications and policy advocacy.
IRI Indonesia was officially launched in 2020 and is entering a new phase aimed at strengthening partnerships, scaling its impact, and positioning faith-based leadership as a force for rainforest protection and the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Officer will lead the design and execution of IRI Indonesia’s communications and public engagement strategies. This includes overseeing brand identity, creating compelling content, managing digital platforms, documenting program activities, and delivering targeted messaging that resonates with faith communities, policymakers, Indigenous Peoples, and the broader public.
The role requires creativity, strategic thinking, and technical skill in multimedia communications, as well as a strong commitment to environmental protection and spiritual values. The Communications Officer will be part of the IRI Indonesia team based within EcoNusa Foundation, the host organization of the partnership, and will work closely with the National Facilitator. The position is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communications and Campaign Management
- Lead the development and implementation of IRI Indonesia’s internal communications strategy, including the development of a newsletters, coordination with core partners, and internal content management
- Lead the development and implementation of IRI Indonesia’s external communications strategy, including managing creative content for IRI Indonesia flagship communications channels
- Lead the development of a campaign that works through radio, TV, social media and other channels to bring the reality of deforestation to the public in large cities that live a great distance from forests.
- Develop messaging frameworks that integrate spiritual, scientific, and policy narratives on rainforest protection.
- Plan and execute strategic communications campaigns to raise awareness, shift public discourse, and mobilize faith-based constituencies.
Content Creation and Visual Storytelling
- Design communications materials and digital assets (brochures, infographics, presentations, newsletters, etc.) consistent with IRI brand guidelines.
- Produce high-quality written and visual content for print, web, and social media that highlight IRI Indonesia’s work, partners, and impact.
- Support the creation of religious teaching tools and resources customized for Indonesia’s diverse faith traditions.
Digital Platforms and Media Engagement
- Manage and regularly update IRI Indonesia’s website and social media channels.
- Develop multimedia content, including videos, audio, and graphics, to increase online reach and engagement.
- Build and manage media relations, including drafting press releases, securing media coverage, and coordinating interviews with IRI spokespeople.
Documentation and Outreach
- Document IRI Indonesia activities, events, and campaigns through photography, videography, and written reports.
- Maintain an organized digital library of photos, videos, and communications outputs.
- Coordinate production of a regular e-newsletter for dissemination to national and global partners.
Advocacy Communications
- Design and produce advocacy materials to support IRI’s engagement with policymakers.
- Assist in preparing high-level presentations, talking points, and briefings for religious leaders and program representatives.
- Support the development of communications products that promote policy reforms that protect and restore rainforests.
Partnership and Coordination
- Work closely with the communications officers of partner organizations (including EcoNusa) to ensure alignment and amplification of shared messages.
- Support communications needs of provincial chapters, facilitating visibility for local actions and campaigns.
- Engage faith leaders and Indigenous representatives to feature in storytelling, campaign content, and media outreach.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, environmental studies, or a related field. Proven experience and results may replace academic requirements.
- At least 5 years of experience in strategic communications, media engagement, campaign management, or related fields.
- Strong personal commitment to rainforest protection and the promotion of human rights.
- Demonstrated experience managing social media, websites, and digital content production.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with ability to translate complex ideas into accessible and engaging content.
- Proficiency in design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and video editing platforms.
- Experience working with faith-based organizations, Indigenous groups, NGOs, or environmental campaigns.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
- Excellent command of written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia; proficiency in English is an advantage.
- Willingness to travel within Indonesia and occasionally internationally.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in the fields of rainforest conservation, Indigenous Peoples rights, or climate advocacy.
- Background in campaign development or public mobilization at the national level.
- Familiarity with Indonesia’s religious, political, and media landscapes.
- Experience producing content for multi-faith audiences or integrating spiritual narratives into environmental messaging.
